“Canada’s Creeping Economic Apartheid” by Grace-Edward Galabuzi (2001)
Grace Edward Galabuzi’s downloadable report, which was turned into the book Canada’s Economic Apartheid, clearly describes the growing racialisation of the gap between the rich and poor, using both statistical data and personal stories. Galibuzi shows that historical patterns of systemic racial discrimination are key to understanding the persistent overrepresentation of racialised groups in low-paying occupations and low income sectors, their higher unemployment, and their poverty and social marginalisation. An invaluable resource for teaching the connections between race/racism, immigration, poverty, the economy, and neoliberalism in university classrooms.
